The compact device in a robust, ergonomically shaped plastic housing with a soft-touch surface and practical belt holder is extremely well equipped. In addition to locking XLR connectors for the balanced input of the L/R stereo signal, the HPA 1 has a 3.5 mm stereo jack as an aux input that can be used in parallel for click or playback tracks. It is protected against excessive input levels for safe operation; a hollow pin socket with negative internal contact enables the connection of a mains adapter in fixed operation. A 3.5 mm stereo jack serves as a headphone and earphone output. Level and balance can be adjusted with handy rotary controls, and a button switches from the stereo signal to the mono sum. A fully-fledged limiter is integrated for distortion-free playback and to protect against feedback. To provide an overview of functions, the LD Systems HPA 1 has two-color LEDs that show, among other things, how the limiter responds to level peaks and the battery level. At 165 grams, the headphone amplifier is extremely lightweight and can be operated for up to 12 hours with a high-quality 9V block.
